Which one was the first castle I ever visited? I wouldn’t know. But according to my photo album in the Summer of 1981, when I was almost 8 years old, my parents, my younger sister and I visited the Radboud Castle in Medemblik, The Netherlands. If not the first, it was at least one of the first of my many castle visits.
The castle is from the 13th century, the building was commissioned by Count Floris V of Holland and completed before December 1287. It is the only castle left from that period. Why it is called Radboud? According to a legend from 1517 in the seventh century the castle of Redbad (Radboud), King of the Frisians was situated on the borders of the Zuiderzee (South Sea). The king died in 719.
