Net als ten tijde van de 18de verjaardag van haar vader Koning Willem-Alexander in 1985 en haar grootmoeder Prinses Beatrix der Niederlanden in 1956 is er een officieel boek verschenen over de Prinses van Oranje, Amalia, die op 7 december 2021 haar 18de verjaardag viert. Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria, Prinses van Oranje, Prinses der Nederlanden, Prinses van Oranje-Nassau zoals haar volledige naam en titel luidt, werd geboren in het Bronovo Ziekenhuis in Den Haag, Nederland, op 7 december 2003 als de oudste dochter van de toenmalige Prins van Oranje en zijn vrouw Prinses Máxima.
Like at the time of the 18th birthday of her father King Willem-Alexander in 1985 and her grandmother Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1956 an official book was published about the Princess of Orange, Amalia, who will celebrate her 18th birthday on 7 December 2021. Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria, Princess of Orange, Princess of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau, as her full name and title are, was born at the Bronovo Hospital in The Hague, The Netherlands on 7 December 2003 as the eldest daughter of the then Prince of Orange and his wife Princess Máxima.
Claudia de Breij heeft de prinses in de zomer van 2021 meerdere keren getroffen. De uitgever, Uitgeverij Pluim, omschrijft het boek als:
Met Amalia zet Claudia de Breij de traditie voort die begon met Hella Haasse die een portret van Beatrix schreef (1955) en Renate Rubinstein die Willem-Alexander portretteerde in 1985 ter gelegenheid van hun achttiende verjaardag.
De prinses heeft Claudia de Breij meegenomen naar plekken die voor haar belangrijk zijn, waaronder de Koninklijke Stallen, het strand en haar school. Ze hebben gesprekken gevoerd over haar motivatie om af te zien van haar toelage, over zingen voor jezelf, cocktails maken, over hoe paardrijden helpt je hoofd leeg te maken en over de voor- en nadelen van sociale media. Ook kwam aan de orde wat het koningschap en haar toekomstige rol momenteel voor haar betekenen. Het boek laat zien wie Amalia nu is – door de ogen van Claudia de Breij.
Claudia de Breij has hit the Princess several times in the summer of 2021. The publisher, Uitgeverij Pluim, describes the book as:
With Amalia, Claudia de Breij continues the tradition that started with Hella Haasse who wrote a portrait of Beatrix (1955) and Renate Rubinstein who portrayed Willem-Alexander in 1985 on the occasion of their eighteenth birthday.
The Princess took Claudia de Breij to places that are important to her, including the Royal Stables, the beach and her school. They talked about her motivation to give up her allowance, about singing for yourself, making cocktails, about how horse riding helps to clear your head and about the pros and cons of social media. She also discussed what being a monarch and her future role currently mean to her. The book shows who Amalia is now – through the eyes of Claudia de Breij.
Het boek dat op 16 november 2021 verscheen, is al een bestseller. Er zijn al zeker 100.000 exemplaren verkocht en het boek voert al twee weken lang de bestsellerlijsten in Nederland aan. Op de achterzijde van het boek staat:
“Ons eerste echte gesprek voeren we in de werkkamer van haar moeder. Zij op de donkerblauwe bank, ik in een dito fauteuil, onhandig krabbelend in het opschrijfboekje op mijn schoot.
Het is een nieuwe Leuchtturm, zo’n chique met lijntjes en paginanummering, door deze schrijfwarenfetisjist speciaal voor dit doel aangeschaft.
De bladzijden leeg, het omslag geel.
‘Waarom niet oranje?’ vraagt Amalia.
Pas als ik haar aankijk, zie ik haar spottende blik.”
The book, that was published on 16 November 2021, is already a bestseller. At least 100,000 copies have already been sold and the book has been topping the bestseller lists in the Netherlands in the past two weeks. The back of the book reads:
“Our first real conversation took place in her mother’s study. She on the dark blue couch, I in a ditto armchair, awkwardly scribbling in the notebook on my lap.
It’s a new Leuchtturm, such a chic one with lines and page numbering, bought by this stationery fetishist especially for this purpose.
The pages are empty, the cover yellow.
Why not orange?’ asks Amalia.
It’s only when I look at her that I see she is mocking me.
Mijn eerste vraag, al voor het boek gepubliceerd was, was: waarom deze mooie, maar oude foto uit januari 2020 op de cover? Er had toch wel een nieuwe foto kunnen worden gemaakt? Die vraag werd al op de dag van de verschijning in een video van Amalia en Claudia voor me beantwoord: Amalia koos de foto zelf uit. Met dat antwoord kan ik wel vrede hebben. Later op de dag had ik zelf eindelijk mijn eigen exemplaar in handen. Het is een kleine uitgave met vrij grote letters en ook niet heel dik, maar 112 pagina’s. Maar het blijkt al snel dat het boek leest als een trein en heerlijk korte hoofdstukken heeft. “Amalia” verschijnt als een gebonden boek met stofomslag inclusief foto’s uit het privéarchief van de prinses. Deze foto’s zijn prachtig. En in de video onthult ze nog iets, dat zo op het eerste gezicht niet zichtbaar is en ik waarschijnlijk anders nooit ontdekt zou hebben: haar handtekening staat op de omslag en is alleen zichtbaar als je de stofomslag van het boek afhaalt.
My first question, even before the book was published, was: why this beautiful, but old photograph from January 2020 on the cover? Surely a new photograph could have been taken? This question was already answered for me on the day of the publication in a video by Amalia and Claudia: Amalia chose the photo herself. I can be content with that answer. Later that day, I finally had my own copy in my hands. It is a small edition with rather large letters and not very thick either, only 112 pages. But it soon turns out that the book reads like a train (as we say in the Netherlands) and has wonderfully short chapters. “Amalia’ is published as a hardcover book, including photos from the princess’s private archive. These photos are lovely. And in the video, she reveals something else that is not visible at first glance and that I would probably never have discovered otherwise: her signature is on the cover and is only visible when you remove the dust jacket from the book.
Naast serieuze informatie levert het boek ook een schat aan persoonlijke informatie op. Er is veel dat de Nederlanders nog niet over Amalia weten. Waarom heet ze eigenlijk Amalia, hobby’s, vrienden, jongens, muziek (après-ski hits! Mijn collega in Duitsland heeft echt in een deuk gelegen), school, werk, paarden, vakantie, nanny’s, haar zusjes en zelfs haar eigen kamer in Paleis Huis ten Bosch. Ook vertelt ze over serieuzere zaken als het overlijden van haar tante Inès Zorreguieta, Covid-19, haar toekomstplannen.
Besides serious information, the book also provides a wealth of personal information. There is a lot that the Dutch don’t know yet about Amalia. Why is her name actually Amalia, hobbies, friends, boyfriends, music (après-ski hits! My colleague in Germany really cracked up), school, work, horses, holidays, nannies, her sisters and even her own room in Palace Huis ten Bosch. She also talks about more serious matters such as the death of her aunt Inès Zorreguieta, Covid-19 and her plans for the future.
Na haar 18de verjaardag zal ze iets vaker in het openbaar verschijnen zoals bij de opening van het parlement, Prinsjesdag, in September. Al zegt ze dat ze nog wel even gaat oefenen hoe ze de koets in en uit moet komen. Ze krijgt een eigen monogram, heeft haar uitkering van de staat voorlopig afgewezen. Met haar toekomstige look bij staatsbezoeken e.d. zit het wel goed. Amalia wilde als kind al een prinsesje zijn, en ze heeft altijd al van tiaras gehouden. Bovendien laat ze zich graag door haar modebewuste moeder Koningin Máxima adviseren.
After her 18th birthday, she will appear in public a little more often, such as at the opening of the parliament, Prinsjesdag, in September. Although she says she will need to practice how to get in and out of the carriage. She will have her own monogram, and has turned down her state allowance for the time being. Zeker is er inmiddels al veel informatie in de media verschenen, maar het is fijn alles nog maar een keer in alle rust in de juiste context te kunnen lezen. Een aanrader? Zeker! Mijn exemplaar is inmiddels uitgeleend aan mijn moeder en een vriendin van mijn zusje (toevallig geboren op 7 december), die toch wel erg nieuwsgierig waren en Amalia graag een beetje beter wilden leren kennen.
Certainly, a lot of information has already appeared in the media, but it is nice to be able to read it all again in the proper context. Highly recommended? Definitely! My copy has been lent to my mother and a friend of my sister’s (who happens to be born on 7 December), who were very curious and wanted to get to know Amalia a little better.
Een tip voor de uitgever: de belangstelling voor een editie in het Duits en Engels is groot. Ik vrees echter dat het zover niet zal komen.
A tip for the publisher: there is great interest in a German and an English edition. I however fear that will never happen.
