Two weeks to go until the big wedding in Luxembourg. I am really looking forward to see Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy getting married. And of course I hope for lots of interesting royal and noble guests. The names known so far sound quite promising.
You always have to wait what is being organized when there is a big royal wedding. I remember the weddings of Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde, and Prince Laurent and Princess Claire, in Brussels. Around the first wedding there was some decoration in town, but hardly souvenirs as far as I can remember, at least not easy to find. At the second wedding there was hardly anything at all. Other weddings, like the crown princely weddings in The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and Spain were at least very visible everywhere. Decorations in the streets, in shop windows, lots of newspapers and magazines writing about it. In Spain there was even a special royal wedding shop. Not to mention the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year.
I didn’t know what to expect in Luxembourg, especially because from the newspapers there I don’t really get the impression that the people in Luxembourg are that interested in it. But hurrah, there will be some wedding souvenirs, apart from the poststamps that were issued recently (see here). The grand-ducal family however seems to have approved a few wedding souvenirs, including postcards of the couple. Hope they are not sold out by the time I reach Luxembourg. There also seem to be flags and magnets. And the company Villeroy & Boch has been allowed to produce a few wedding souvenirs: plates, a “bonbonnière” and beakers. Hopefully they are nice and not too expensive, as I’d like to take a few souvenirs home.
I’m jealous you will be in Luxembourg for the wedding. I wish I could go because Luxembourg looks like such a beautiful country. But I’ll settle for a livestream at RTL. However you’re right. Every poll from the various Luxemourg press seems to indicate the people are not interested in the wedding. Hopefully that’s not a true indication of the level of excitement.
I still have to travel quite far by train. Almost one day for the trip to Luxemburg, and another for the trip back. And then I have three days in Luxemburg. Got cheap train tickets at the German railway.
Ooh, didn’t realize it was that far. I’m glad the train tickets were cheap though. Since you’re staying in Luxembourg for three days, are you utilizing the offer from Luxembourg City Tourist Office? Hope you enjoy the trip and I’ll be looking forward to your post.
No, that offer was only two nights, and I am staying four nights. The offer also came only long after I had booked. With these big weddings you better book a hotel as soon as possible. Just be sure you take something you can eventually cancel later on. I have only been in Luxemburg once, for one whole day, so I haven’t seen too much of it yet.
I am looking forward to seeing your report and pictures of this wedding, thanks in advance
