Not surprisingly the wedding of Count Caspar von Matuschka and Countess Leonie von Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems attracted some attention. Not at least because her very royal godfather turned up with his wife and eldest daughter. Caspar and Leonie got married on Saturday, 22 June 2024, at the Pfarrkirche St. Karl Borromäus in Hohenems, Austria.
The bridal children were Clarissa Waldburg-Zeil, Josephine Waldburg-Zeil, Louise Waldburg-Zeil, Philippa Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems, Leo von der Leyen, Antonius von der Leyen, Maxi von der Leyen, Christoph Douglas, Tatiana von Weiler, Mathilda Bechtolsheim and Masha Gerson.
The witnesses for the bridal couple were Countess Sophie of Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems, Helena Grolman, Count Constantin zu Königsegg, Count Vincent von Matuschka Count Albrecht von Bernstorff, Count Johannes von Bernstorff and Benedict Selkirk.
The tiara was reportedly a present of Empress Elisabeth of Austria “Sisi” to her granddaughter Elisabeth, the great-grandmother of the bride, who in 1912 married Count Georg von Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems. I assume so it was gifted when Elisabeth was a little girl, as she was born in 1892 and the Empress killed in 1898.
She is a goddaughter of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and of Archduchess Maria of Austria. When the King and Queen of the Netherlands got married in 2002 she was one of the bridal children.
They were of course among the around 550 guests, together with Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Amalia, The Princess of Orange, and Archduke Simeon of Austria. Other guests were Hereditary Princess Sophie and Princess Marie-Caroline von und zu Liechtenstein, Prince Maximilian and Princess Angela von und zu Liechtenstein, Duke Wilhelm of Württemberg with his mother Duchess Marie, Margrave Bernhard and Margravine Stephanie of Baden, Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria and Daniel Terberger, Princess Alexandra of Hohenzollern, Fürst Heinrich XIV and Fürstin Johanna Reuss, Fürstin Mathilde von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg with one of her daughters, members of the families Waldburg, Quadt, Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg, and many others.
It was Marlene Koenig who in February 2023 on her blog Royal Musings announced the engagement of the young couple. The groom was born in 1994 as son of Count Nikolaus von Matuschka and Marie-Louise von Voss. The bride was born in 1997 as the third daughter of Count Franz-Clemens von Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems and his wife Stephanie née Countess von Blanckenstein. She grew up in Hohenems with her sisters Tatiana, Cecilia and Sophie.
Her sister Princess Tatiana in 2021 married Philipp Eisl in the same church (report here).
