As I see ANP photos almost on a daily base I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of the exhibition “Onze Koningin 1980-2013” in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam. To honour Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands 145 pictures were selected from the ANP database, showing 75 years Queen Beatrix and 33 years of reign. But on Monday, the last day of Queen Beatrix’ reign, I decided to visit the exhibition after all. And to my surprise I enjoyed the exhibition tremendously. Although I knew lots of photos already, there were still a few unknown ones. Seeing them in bigger size than usual is really nice. A few pictures were even in huge size, and around every corner there is a new one waiting for you. Next to the pictures was a bit more explanation with short, historical texts and anecdotes. I didn’t spend much time reading, but made lots of photographs myself. And now I can enjoy the pictures again, and read the texts quietly at home.
The pictures show Queen Beatrix from her early childhood until almost the end of her reign. In good times and in bad times. I even remembered a few occasions myself, as I had attended these events personally. At the end of the tour you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at the café, surrounded by royal pictures. Don’t miss the ones that cover the windows. Them being transparant gives a very beautiful effect, almost as if Queen Beatrix is protecting the world outside. If you also want to have a look, the exhibition is open until 26 May 2013 from 10am to 6pm. The entrance fee is 8,50 Euros. At the entrance of the museum you can buy the exhibition guide or a few lovely postcards, also afterwards. Visitors can also choose their favourite photo of the Queen, which will become the official commemorative picture.
