The country
The state is formally known as Perlis Indera Kayangan, but usually called Perlis.
Perlis used to be a part of Kedah. The area was ruled by Siam and Aceh. Kedah was conquered by Siam in 1821. The British and Siam formalised relations between Kedah and Perlis in the Burney and Low Treaties in 1826. The exiled Sultan of Kedah was however not restored to the throne until 1842, when he agreed to accept Siamese terms. Perlis was however turned into a separate principality, a vassal state of Siam.
Sayyid Hussain Jamalulail became the deputy governor and in 1843 the first Raja of Perlis. He was a maternal grandson of the Sultan of Kedah. In 1909 Siam was forced to relinquish Perlis to Great Britain, and a British Resident was installed. In World War II Perlis was returned to Siam. After the war Perlis returned to British rule. It became part of the Malayan Union, in 1957 of the Federation of Malaya and in 1963 of Malaysia. Perlis is the smallest state of Malaysia.
