The country
The emirate is known as Emirate of Umm Al Qaiwain or Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. The country is being reigned by the Al Mu’alla dynasty.
The earliest settlements in the area are shown more than 7000 years ago. During the Bronze Age semi-nomadic tribes came to the region. About 200 years ago the Al Ali tribe moved to the area and in 1775 Sheikh Majid Al Mu’alla established an independent Sheikhdom. Sheikh Abdullah I signed the General Maritime Treaty with Great Britain in 1820, and the area became a British protectorate. On 2 December 1971 Umm Al Qaiwain joined the United Arab Emirates.
Sovereign
The current sovereign is Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu’alla, Emir of Umm Al Qaiwain. He was born on 1 October 1952.
He is a son of Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmed Al Mu’alla, Emir of Umm Al Qaiwain (1932-2009) and his wife Sheikha Mahra bint Ahmed al Ghurair.
Enthronement
Sheikh Saud succeeded his father as Emir after his death on 2 January 2009. He had been Crown Prince of Umm Al Qaiwain since 22 July 1982.

The heir to the throne is Sheikh Rashid bin Saud Al Mu’alla, Crown Prince of Umm Al Qaiwain. He is Crown Prince of Umm Al Qaiwain since 14 January 2009.
He is a son of Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu’alla, Emir of Umm Al Qaiwain and his wife Sheikha Sumaya bint Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah.
Sheikh Rashid is married since 2012 to Sheikha .. bint Saqr bin Khalid Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah.
