“The Royal Yacht Britannia has had its most successful year since first opening to the public 18 years ago.” several newspapers wrote today. The old royal yacht that was used for more than 40 years until it was decommissioned in 1997, attracted almost 350,000 people in 2016. The Britannia nowadays can be visited in Leith, Edinburgh, and has been the best tourist attraction in Scotland for the past 11 years. That reminds me of my visit, ten years ago, in July 2006. I had been in London before, but never in Scotland, so I paid a visit, starting in Edinburgh.
I was there as soon as the yacht had opened its doors on that day, and when it was still rather quiet on board. Luckily for me, as when I wanted to leave some time later, there was at least one group of school children coming on board. The weather wasn’t too bright, but good enough to walk around on board and on the deck. It was nice to see the sitting rooms, bedrooms, dining hall, and I remember a girl selling fudge. I enjoyed my visit a lot as far as I can remember. So in case you’re ever in Edinburgh and you haven’t visited yet, give it a try.
